One Small Kindness at a Time

In the heart of Bluebell Meadow, a little bluebird named Blu lives in the coziest nest he knows. He built it himself—twig by twig, blade by blade—inside the old apple tree.

At the center of Blu’s nest rests one tiny white feather, a special piece of the home he loves.

Then a powerful spring storm sweeps across the meadow. Blu shelters safely beneath the tree’s roots, but when morning comes, his nest is gone.

With his tiny white feather tucked safely beneath his wing, Blu bravely begins again. Finding a new home and rebuilding it alone, however, is harder than he expected.

Tap the woodpecker notices and finds Blu a safe hollow in the Old Oak. Pip the chickadee notices and brings soft moss. Soon Winnie Wren, Ruby Robin, and Della Dove arrive with bark, grasses, rootlets, and feathers.

Blu never asked them to help. They simply noticed.

Working beak beside beak and wing beside wing, the friends build a nest that is sturdy, soft, and filled with kindness. When another gust scatters their materials, nobody waits to be asked. Together, they gather every piece and begin again.

Blu remains the heart of the building while each friend contributes something special. When the nest is complete, Blu places his little white feather safely in the center and realizes that home is more than the place that holds you.

Home is also the friends who hold you up.

A Nest for Blu is a gentle, beautifully illustrated read-aloud about noticing when someone needs help, accepting kindness, working together, and passing that kindness on to someone new.

Blu blinked. “I didn’t ask you to do that.” “I know,” said Pip. “But I noticed.”
